As the name implies, these fonts do not have serifs, making the letters of fonts are often regular geometric shapes with straight lines and right angles.

Because of its appearance, sans serif fonts are mainly used in headlines and practically unsuitable for reading – badly readable.

The first Typewriter of this class was created in 1816. It was used to attract attention in advertising and headlines. The founder of modern typographic font is considered to be universal grotesque grotesque accidents, developed in 1896 by an unknown artist of the firm Berthold. In XX century, grotesques were used for accidents (to attract attention), and for a set of text.
